"People come up to me, and tell me the car is 'awesome', and they thank me. I get lots of thumbs up when I drive it." |
AUBURN, NY--After 9/11, Walter Ellis wanted to show the world how he felt about the event, and his country. The semi-retired classic car buff and his wife, Diane, not only donated money to help the victims, they also dedicated their 1955 Chevy 210 to those who perished that day. An artist was hired, and the result is remarkable.Likenesses of the Twin Towers appear out of images of a rippling flag, on each side of the car, along with the words, "Gone but not forgotten." Across the trunk, an eagle bears a ribbon emblazoned with the message, "In Memory of Sept. 11, 2001". "God Bless America" and "Make No Mistake, The Giant Is Awake" appear on either side of the license plate. The car interior is accessorized with cushions and decorative items in red, white and blue. And, even the compartment holding the powerful 350 engine is painted red, white and blue. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis participate in classic car shows from NY to Florida and Ohio. They also have frequently been invited to exhibit their All-American automobile in parades. "If I don't have a conflict, I'll try to make it," says Mr. Ellis. "And, every where I go, I fly my flag." |
