Columbia River Young Marines honor Veterans

The Columbia River Young Marines is one of over 200 units, comprised of more than 14,000 youths belonging to the national Young Marine Program, which is sponsored by the Marine Corps League. There are 6 units in Washington state alone, with the other units spread across some 35 of the United States, from Maine to Alaska.

According to the Columbia River group's web site, the Young Marine program, started in 1958, "endeavors to instill positive values in today's boys and girls, aged 8 to 18.

"The Young Marine program is not a program for couch potatoes, or a baby-sitting service. It is a challenging, exciting and motivating program that requires commitment to excel.

The Young Marines do not teach use of weapons, techniques of warfare, or military strategy.

"Our youth receive opportunities to build their pride and leadership skills through such challenging events (as) rappelling, physical fitness, camping, close order drill, swimming, land navigation and many other activities. They ... earn promotions and ribbons through their achievements...as they grow in skill. There are also travel opportunities as the Young Marines participate in National Schools or encampments with other units."

The web site notes that Young Marines are not "funded organization(s)" but instead rely on fundraising efforts of its young participants, and the benevolence of the businesses and service organizations in their community.

"We cannot give your child self-esteem, no one can, but we can give him or her opportunities to earn it," the Columbia River Young Marines site says. "When something is earned, it has more value and is worth keeping."

The Columbia River Young Marines of Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland, WA provide honor guard and support during Memorial Day 2002.

"They started off the day putting flags on veteran's graves in two cementaries. Next, they provided color guard and escort to those being honored," reports Rhonda Evans, proud mother of a Young Marine. "They will participate in this year's ceremonies, also."
