WHAT 9/11 MADE ME REALIZE
by Beaux Carriere

There once was a day when Americans felt so secure and invincible that never in our wildest dreams would we have been able to depict a day of such colossal destruction as September eleventh. Before that infamous day, the Atlantic Ocean and thousands of miles seemed to separate us from mass bombings and horrific acts of terrorism. The black and white pages of our newspapers seemed to be the closest that we would get to such acts.

Three years ago this September, a form of hatred, unknown to many and misperceived by many others was brought to the very doorstep of our nation. Thousands of our brothers and sisters were murdered by nineteen members of a terrorist organization that reflects the hatred and determination of so many others. This is not an event that we can forget in the name of progress. All Americans should be encouraged to let September eleventh be a constant reminder that when a nation becomes complacent, tragedy results. However I am willing to bet that those innocent lives that were lost on that infamous day would be proud to see how we Americans have pulled together to ensure that such acts of terrorism will never be brought to our nation's doorstep again. I am truly proud to see our nation embrace patriotism with such determination and will.

It is unfortunate that it took such enormous acts of terrorism to awaken our country. However, as our tears begin to dry, we find ourselves a more unified, and patriotic nation. Our nation's flag is no longer an annual symbol of Independence Day; it is a symbol of our unity, our strength, and our patriotism. Terrorists can tear apart our steel and our sheetrock, but we must make sure that they do not tear apart our unity and our love for our nation.

Unfortunately, another tragedy resulted from September eleventh, one that is not as apparent. American Muslims and others of Middle Eastern heritage are suffering great prejudices within the borders of our great nation. These are such ignorant hatreds, for they arise from a lack of understanding. To begin to rationalize persecution of others based on religion or ethnicity sets us back as a nation. If we Americans begin to divide ourselves, we will loose the foundation of our republic: unity. So I urge all Americans to combat these primitive practices in the name of progress and brotherhood.

Furthermore, we must stand tall together to guarantee our nation's safety, or we shall find ourselves on our knees at the mercy of our adversaries. We must stand tall and embrace each other not only as Americans but also as brothers and sisters. We Americans must realize that this is our nation; and it is our job to ensure that while we do not dwell on past tragedies, we prevent and eradicate future threats towards our nation.

Confucius said, "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." It is my hope that as Americans, joined together, we realize that it is our time to rise up.
