Collection Effort Underway in CNY

March 30,2003--Ski masks are proving to be highly desirable pieces of equipment for US Marines exposed to high winds and swirling sand in the Middle East. Thus the tools of Central NY skiers, snowmobilers and snowboarders are being collected for the deployed Marines at the Skaneateles Recreation Center, on Rte. 321 in Skaneateles and All Sports Fitness complex, on Lee Mulroy Rd., in Marcellus, and at the Marine Corps Company building in the Mattydale area.

Says one Marine spouse, "Of course the Marines provide their people with goggles, but the guys from snowy upstate NY know what very good ski goggles are like, really tight fitting, and no gaps. They just love to have the ones from home."

The masks will be shipped overseas on an ongoing basis from US Marine Corps Company B(REIN) 8th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division, (REIN) PO Box 36 East Molloy and Townline Rd., Syracuse, NY 13211-0036, along with care packages containing toiletries and snacks.

Friends and fans of that Marine unit, which currently has some 100 people deployed, are busy packing priority mail boxes filled with items donated by the community.

A Marine spouse says,"People have really been wonderful about dropping off the kinds of stuff Marines need when they're deployed far from home. But we also need some financial support to provide postage so we can send these boxes to everyone in the unit."

Typically postage for each box is between $6 and $10. Donations of money or stamps may be sent to the attention of Sgt. Major Morris. The checks should be made out to the "Marine Corps League", and in the "for" line people should specify "B Co. Care Packages".
